Inge Lise Westman – Life and Work – A Chronological Account
Discover the life and varied work of artist Inge Lise Westman as Ulla Bechsgaard gives a talk at Gudhjem Museum. Drawing on personal interviews, she offers insights into the interplay between deep engagement with art, family life and positions of responsibility.
A talk by Ulla Bechsgaard, journalist and co-author of the book “Inge Lise Westman – maler, grafiker, billedhugger”.
Inge Lise trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and moved to the outskirts of Gudhjem in 1971, where she lived and created her extensive and varied body of work.
She became one of the most prominent artists of her time – not just on Bornholm, but throughout Denmark’s art world. She worked in many different materials and formats, drawing inspiration primarily from nature.
Her work is represented in more than 10 Danish museums, including Gudhjem Museum, where you can enjoy her sculpture “Ørnenæb” in front of the museum.
Her connection with Gudhjem Museum has been invaluable to the museum, including when her enormous canvases were displayed at Holkahesten’s annual summer exhibition.
Ulla Bechsgaard’s talk draws on a series of personal interviews conducted during visits to the artist’s home and studio. The conversations explored how Inge Lise Westman managed to combine family life, positions of responsibility and deep engagement with her art.
