Come closer to Bornholm

There are places that never really leave you. That stay with you and draw you back.
Bornholm is such a place.

Here, rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, lively towns and a strong local culture come together on an island that feels both close by and far away. Many return again and again. Not only to relive what they already know, but to discover something new.

Because you are never quite finished with Bornholm.

The island has its own rhythm, and it changes with the seasons. Here, there is room for both liveliness and stillness, for movement and immersion. The short distances make it easy to follow the day as it unfolds - from coast to forest, from harbour to town.

Bornholm’s official travel portal brings together inspiration for your holiday on Bornholm. Here you will find experiences, attractions, towns, nature, places to eat and accommodation - all year round.

The legends live in the landscape

On Bornholm, nature is full of stories. In cliffs, hills, forests and rift valleys live the tales of the underground folk, small beings and forces that people once knew to treat with care.

The legends are not just old fairy tales. They reveal a close relationship with the landscape, where nature is never only nature, but also something to listen to and respect.

Discover Bornholm’s towns

Bornholm’s towns lie close to one another, yet each has its own atmosphere. Here, harbours, squares, smokehouses, small shops, arts and crafts, history and everyday life sit side by side. Explore the towns, and come closer to the island life that ties Bornholm together.

A rocky island with roots near the equator

Bornholm is Denmark’s only rocky island because the island’s ancient bedrock is visible in the landscape. In the rest of Denmark, the bedrock is covered by younger layers of sand, clay, limestone and soil, but on Bornholm the old stone breaks through.

Geologically, Bornholm belongs to the Baltic and Scandinavian bedrock. More than a billion years ago, this land area lay in very different places on the globe, at times much closer to the equator than today. Since then, continents have moved, seas have come and gone, and the ice has smoothed the landscape.

What remains is an island where Denmark’s oldest rock still shapes the coasts, rift valleys, cliffs and that special Bornholm feeling of standing on something very old.
