Can you make 7 metric tons of rock move?

Among the trees in Almindingen lies a stone with a rather unusual feature. The Rocking Stone weighs around 7 metric tons – yet it is so finely balanced that it can rock.

This large glacial erratic was left on Bornholm by the ice sheet around 10,000 years ago and is the smallest of the island’s three rocking stones. But how can several metric tons of rock move at all? Bornholm’s folklore naturally has an explanation: according to an old legend, the stone rests on a diamond, which is what makes it rock.

You’ll find the Rocking Stone north of Lilleborg, surrounded by Almindingen forest. It makes an ideal short stop on a hike, where you can get close to a remnant of the Ice Age – and discover for yourself whether there is still movement in those 7 metric tons of rock.

Stop by, give the Rocking Stone a try, and see if you can make one of Bornholm’s ancient giants rock.
