Visit Bornholm’s smallest church

Just east of Knudsker and only a few kilometers from Rønne, you will find St. Knud’s Church – Bornholm’s smallest church. This little medieval church has stood here since around 1150–1200 and is named after the Danish king Canute the Holy.

From the outside, the church looks simple, but the building holds many details from its long history. It was built in the Romanesque style with a nave, chancel, apse and tower, while the porch was added later in the Middle Ages.

The church tower was built at the same time as the rest of the church, but was not originally a bell tower. It was built as a defensive tower, reflecting a time when the church could also serve a protective function.

Although St. Knud’s Church is Bornholm’s smallest, it has changed over the centuries. Among other alterations, the walls of the nave have been raised several times, most recently in 1906.

Stop by this little church while exploring the area around Rønne and discover nearly 900 years of Bornholm’s church history.
