Bornholm Nature Code
The Bornholm Nature Code is an invitation to experience the island’s dramatic cliffs, deep rift valleys and wild forests with care. See how we can protect biodiversity together and show care for the island’s diverse nature as we explore Bornholm.

Nature is never far away
Breathe in the scent of wet moss in a rift valley, hear the sea breaking against the cliffs and feel the calm beneath the treetops. On Bornholm, nature changes character over short distances, from cliffs and deep forests to open landscapes, long stretches of coast and white sandy beaches.
The Bornholm Nature Code is about caring for what makes the island’s nature so special, and about how we share these experiences. It is about care for nature and for each other, so there is room for people, animals, plants and wild nature in the years to come.

We share nature
There is plenty of room for all of us in Bornholm’s nature. Whether you are looking for wind in your hair along the coast, a quiet walk in the forest or speed on the mountain bike trails, we share nature and the experiences it offers.
You may encounter both wild animals and grazing livestock along the way. Give them space, keep your distance and do not feed them. If your route passes through a fenced area, remember to close gates behind you.
When you meet other people enjoying the outdoors, a smile, slowing down a little and giving them room to pass can make a big difference on a busy trail.
Love of nature
The raw granite cliffs, old trees and sensitive heathlands need our care. A love of nature shows in the small things we do. Follow marked routes and signs where indicated, avoid disturbing wildlife, and leave flowers and wild plants where they grow so others can enjoy them too.
Take your best memories and experiences home with you, but leave only your footprints.
More room for wild nature
Bornholm is working to make more room for nature and greater biodiversity. In some places, natural processes are given more space, while other valuable natural areas need active management to preserve their particular species and habitat types.
Some natural areas can welcome many visitors, while others need more peace and quiet. Follow signs and local guidance, and give nature a little extra space where it needs it.
The Nature Code in practice
The main principles are simple:
- Be considerate of others and give each other space when you meet.
- Take care around animals, plants, trees, cliffs and habitats.
- Follow signs and the rules that apply in the area.
- Use marked routes and paths where indicated.
- Take your rubbish and belongings with you.
Rules can vary depending on the area and activity. Check the local conditions if, for example, you plan to cycle, ride, climb, stay overnight or light a fire.
The Bornholm Nature Code is first and foremost an invitation to be mindful as you move around the island. When we carry these small considerations with us, there is room for quiet walks, active experiences and the nature we came to be close to.
Thank you for helping to take care of Bornholm’s nature.

Visit Bornholm with care
You can make a difference during your visit too. Choose local and organic produce, use the recycling and waste-sorting options you find along the way, and take your rubbish with you. In this way, you show care for both nature and those who come after you.
