Talk: Sculptor Kirsten Ortwed – cool and uncompromising for five decades.
Presented by Tine Nygaard, artistic director and cand.phil., and Lotte Nishanthi Winther, museum inspector and mag.art., both from Bornholm Art Museum.
For five decades, Kirsten Ortwed has challenged and renewed the language of sculpture through a precise and uncompromising artistic practice. Her work ranges from early anti-sculptures and her major work for the Venice Biennale to monumental public commissions and later works in materials such as gold, onyx and bronze. Ortwed was born in 1948, graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1975 and achieved her international breakthrough in 1997.
The talk offers insight into her artistic development, focusing on form, materials and the understanding of her works. It takes works from 1979 onwards as its starting point and includes the current exhibition at Bornholm Art Museum, where Ortwed has transformed the museum’s rooms into sculptural landscapes.
The talk takes place on 15 September 2026 from 5–6 pm. It is free with paid admission and presentation of a Culture Week wristband. Capacity is limited to 60 participants, and tickets must be booked in advance.
