Coast and nature on Bornholm
Cliffs, forests and white sandy beaches
Wild Bornholm
Bornholm is shaped by raw contrasts and deep calm. Here you feel the raw force when the waves of the Baltic Sea strike the steep cliffs to the north. You find stillness in the deep rift valleys, where ferns grow side by side with ancient trees. And to the south, the coaWild Bornholm
st turns into miles of chalk-white sandy beaches, where the sand is so fine that it sings beneath your feet.
Bornholm’s coast and nature are not just a backdrop. They are a living space that draws you closer. Along the coast, through the forest, across the cliffs and down to the sea.
Here you can hike, cycle, swim, fish, climb or simply find a quiet place out of the wind. On Bornholm, the landscape changes quickly. That makes it easy to come close to nature, to your body and to the stillness.

Natural gems with deep roots
Bornholm’s nature begins deep in the rock. The island is the only place in Denmark where the bedrock emerges in the landscape, giving the coast and nature a particular weight. Here, granite rises straight from the sea, cracks open like green valleys, and water finds its way down the rock walls after rain, thaw and spring.
You sense it clearly in the rift valleys. In Ekkodalen, the cliffs stand dark and steep among the trees, and in Døndalen you can hear the waterfall before you see it. Especially in winter and spring, the water gains more force and movement through the landscape.
Elsewhere, history lies heavy and quiet. In Paradisbakkerne and by the island’s rocking stones, you meet the great boulders the ice once left behind. They look immovable, but some of them can be shifted if you find exactly the right point. It is nature’s own reminder that even granite can hold a hidden movement.
When the day lets go, Bornholm shows another side. Far from the lights of the towns, the night sky can feel unusually clear, especially along the coast. Here, nature grows quiet in a new way, and your gaze lifts from cliffs, forest floor and sea to the stars above the Baltic.
Where nature has taken over
Some of Bornholm’s special natural areas were shaped by people before nature slowly took them back. Old quarries, raw rock edges and landscapes marked by coal and industry tell another side of the island’s history.
At Opalsøen, the former granite quarry has become a deep, clear lake between steep cliffs. At Kultippen, the dark, almost moonlike landscape remains as a trace of coal mining by the coast. These are places where Bornholm’s coast and nature are not only about the untouched, but also about change.
Here, history becomes visible in the landscape. You can walk through the traces of what people have broken, dug and moved, and see how wind, water, plants and time slowly give the places a new form.
From moonscape to rock wilderness
If you want to feel Bornholm’s wild contrasts in your body, try the walk along the Kyststien from Hasle towards Vang. After Kultippen and the dark traces of coal mining, nature changes character. The trail winds on through the landscape, past the fishing hamlets of Helligpeder and Teglkås, before Gines Minde opens the way into one of the rawest stretches of the west coast.
Here, the landscape rises steeply from the Baltic Sea. There are no wide beaches or soft transitions, but heights, cliffs and narrow paths that call for good shoes and reward you with a strong sense of Bornholm’s coast and nature.
White sandy beaches and gentle waves
You find the contrast to the cliffs in the south, where the coast opens in long, bright stretches. At Dueodde, the beach becomes wide, the sky larger and the water shallow enough for the day to drift quietly by with swimming, bare feet and children at the water’s edge.
The sand here is something special. It is so fine that it almost sings beneath your feet when it is dry, and it is said that sand from Dueodde was once used in hourglasses. Here, Bornholm’s coast and nature feel lighter and softer, yet the sea is still close.
Around the island, the beaches change character. Some are wide and family-friendly, with plenty of room for towels, beach bags and long days by the water.
Others are small and more hidden, tucked between cliffs, harbours and coastal paths. Here you can sit on a sun-warmed rock and slip straight into the clear, deep water.
On Bornholm, the beach is not only a place to swim. It is a place to walk, collect stones, feel the wind and watch the light shift over the Baltic Sea. From the white sandy beaches to the south to the small rocky coves to the north and east, the sea follows you all the way around the island.

Beaches on Bornholm
All around the island, you will find good places to swim, whether you prefer soft sandy beaches or rugged rock pools. Dueodde Beach is one of Bornholm’s finest and has been highlighted by Lonely Planet as one of the best beaches in the world.

Move away from the coast and into the heart of the island, and you come to Almindingen. Here, the forest stands close around lakes, bogs, paths and rift valleys, and the landscape has a different calm than out by the sea.
At Rytterknægten, Bornholm reaches its highest point. Here, Kongemindet stands among the trees, and from the tower you can look out across the crowns of the forest and further over the island. It is a place where Bornholm feels both small and wide at the same time.
The forest also holds quiet sheets of water, damp hollows and old traces in the landscape. Here you can walk through forest floor, rock and thicket while the light shifts between the trunks.
In Bisonskoven, European bison live in a large enclosure. The heavy animals move through the forest and help create clearings and variation on the forest floor. If you meet them on your walk, stay on roads and paths, move calmly and keep a good distance.
Seeing a European bison among the trees is an intense nature experience. Not because you get close, but because you sense that the forest here has its own rhythm. It is not only an area to pass through. It is a place where you take your time.
Birdlife, bogs and rocky islands
Bornholm’s coast and nature are not only found in cliffs, forests and beaches. They are also found in the quiet wetlands, in the sounds of the reed beds and on the small rocky islands out in the Baltic Sea, where the birdlife takes on a completely different scale.
In Almindingen, Bastemose is a quiet stop between forest and wetland. From the birdwatching tower you can look out across the bog and follow the life between reeds, water surfaces and the forest edge. You may be lucky enough to see cranes, bitterns and birds of prey over the landscape.
At Ølene, nature opens into a larger bird reserve with bog, meadows and reed beds. Here you experience the landscape from the towers at the edge of the reserve, where you can stand still with binoculars and let the landscape come to you.
And then there are Ertholmene. A boat trip from Gudhjem takes you out to the small rocky islands northeast of Bornholm, where the sea, history and birds all fill the space at once. Large colonies of seabirds breed on Græsholm, and razorbills and guillemots have one of their most important Danish breeding sites here. The island itself is a closed bird reserve, but the birdlife is a clear part of the experience when you visit Christiansø and Frederiksø.
Life in the air changes with the season. Some days, migratory birds fill the sky. On other days, it is the sounds from the reed beds, a lone bird over the bog or seabirds circling above the cliffs.
When nature calls for movement
Bornholm is not only an island you look at. You feel it in your legs, in your body and in your pace. Some experiences begin with hiking boots and a path by the sea. Others start at the water’s edge, on the rock or in the forest.
What they have in common is that you come closer to the landscape when you move through it. Here, Bornholm’s coast and nature become something you walk into, cycle through, paddle along or feel directly beneath your hands.

Hiking on Bornholm
Lace up your hiking boots and follow the paths along the sea, through the forest and into the island’s rift valleys. The Kyststien, the Højlyngsstien and the shorter routes in Paradisbakkerne and on Hammerknuden make it easy to find a walk that suits your time, pace and curiosity.

In the middle of Almindingen, close to Rytterknægten, Trailcenter Bornholm is a natural starting point for an active day in the forest. From here you can follow the paths on foot, take your mountain bike into the terrain or use the place as a base before the route continues through hills, forest and granite.
The trail centre brings together several ways to experience Bornholm’s nature. It is a place where you can start calmly, find your direction and feel the forest open around you. Whether you come with a bike, hiking boots or simply the urge to be outdoors.

Cycling on Bornholm
On a bike, you feel Bornholm’s hills, coastal towns and forest roads at your own pace. Follow quiet routes between towns and beaches, try road cycling, gravel or mountain biking, or find the Bornholm climbs where your legs get to work.

When the path ends at the sea, the experience can continue on the water. Along Bornholm’s coast, you can paddle a kayak past the steep cliffs, stand on a SUP board in calm water or feel the wind take hold of sails and surfboard.
Below the surface, another side of the coast opens up. Here, cliffs, seaweed, stones and small creatures become part of the experience, whether you snorkel close to the beach or dive further out with a guide and equipment.
The sea around Bornholm can be gentle one day and more demanding the next. Always check wind, weather and local conditions before you go on the water. That gives you a better experience and more calm to be present in it.
Fishing along four coasts
Along Bornholm’s coast, the fishing changes with the landscape. To the north and west, the cliffs stand close to deep water. To the south and east, the coast becomes softer, with reefs, sandy bottom and shallower water. That makes the island exciting for anglers, whether the trip is about sea trout, garfish or simply a quiet moment by the water.
For many, fishing is as much about the place as the catch. About standing early by the coast as the light rises over the Baltic Sea. About reading the wind, the water and the stones beneath your feet. And about staying in nature long enough for the pace to slow down.
There are also options for calmer fishing trips at lakes and put and take waters, where children and beginners can join in. Wherever you fish, it is important to check fishing licences, protected areas and local rules before you cast your line.
Rock climbing on Bornholm
If you want to get close to Bornholm’s raw nature, you can try your hand at the cliffs. Here, the granite is not just something you look at from a distance. It becomes something you feel beneath your hands, in your body and in the height above the sea.
Bornholm offers special opportunities for climbing in Denmark, both in old quarries and on selected rock faces. In some places, beginners can join guided tours, while more experienced climbers can find routes with greater challenges.
Climbing requires the right equipment, experience and respect for nature. Always check where climbing is allowed and follow local rules and recommendations before you begin.
Get out into Bornholm’s nature
Bornholm’s coast and nature can be experienced in many ways. Some days the sea calls, on others it is the forest, the cliffs, the paths or the small places you had not planned to find.
Take your time. Walk slowly, choose a detour and let the weather be part of the experience. On Bornholm, nature is close by. That makes it easy to go out, return home and come back again tomorrow.
Look for the Milky Way from Hammerknuden
Bornholm’s nature does not close down when the sun sets. Because the island lies isolated in the Baltic Sea, you escape the strong light pollution of the big cities, and that makes the night sky here unusually clear.
One of the strongest places to experience Dark Sky is Hammerknuden on North Bornholm. Step out onto the cliffs on a cloudless evening, and you may see the Milky Way shining clearly above the dark sea.
