What are Bautasten?

Bautasten are tall, elongated stones that were erected by prehistoric people, and which we can still find today. They have been used as memorials, symbols of power or as part of religious rituals.

Bautasten on Bornholm

Bornholm is home to some of Denmark's most impressive standing stones. The island is home to several standing stone fields, where groups of these stones rise up in the landscape, often with a strong symbolic or ceremonial meaning. One of the largest and most famous places is the Gryet area, where several standing stones stand in a dense formation.

Louisenlund

Visit a royal forest between Østermarie and Svaneke, which contains over 50 Bautasten. Close to the crossroads from Østermarie towards Svaneke and Ibsker/Nexø, you will find Louisenlund. A small forest with over 50 Bautasten, which King Frederik the VII. bought in 1851 and named after Countess Louise Danner. Today the forest is owned by the Jægersprisstiftelsen.

Gryet: A burial ground from the Bronze Age

When you are at Louisenlund and looking at the burial stones, Gryet near Paradisbakkerne is also worth a visit. Gryet, located in a small forest near Nexø, is one of Bornholm's largest burial grounds. The oldest burial stone dates from the Bronze Age, but the vast majority of the stones date from the Iron Age. Today you can see 67 burial stones, several of which also bear petroglyphs, standing as silent guardians over the old burial mounds. The area is protected and owned by the Danish Nature Foundation.
