Nexø Recreational Forest
Nexø Recreational Forest is a lush and varied natural area with forest, meadow, swamps and lake. Here you can experience birds both summer and winter, and the long bridge through the reed forest brings you very close to nature.
Nexø Recreational Forest is characterized by deciduous forest with a great deal of variation. There are many different tree species here, both native and introduced. The forest was first planted in the late 19th century. Before that, it was an open and humid meadow and bog area.
In the area, there are more and more meadow areas that are grazed to maintain the meadow flora and to prevent overgrowth. The shallow Ferskesø with surrounding reed swamps can provide good birding experiences all year round. You get close to nature when you use the long bridge that leads over the reed swamp.
In the reed swamp, the reeds form a dense carpet of vegetation over the wet bog floor. With its stems up to 3 m high, reeds are the largest of the Danish grasses.
In addition to reeds, a number of other tall plants can be found, such as tall sweetgrass, reed grass and yellow iris, but also a number of other plants such as sedge crown, common sedge and water navel are typically found in the reed swamp.
At the edge of the freshwater lake, there are unusually large red alders, and there are other beautiful and unusual trees nearby (including large specimens of oak, naur and rowan). In the western part of the pleasure forest, an entire Arboretum was planted in 1996 – a collection of trees consisting of trees that have migrated to Bornholm after the ice age. North of the Arboretum, an area has been designated as "natural forest".
