Ølene Wildlife Reserve
Vestermarie Plantation in Almindingen is a diverse natural area where forest, heathland and open landscapes come together. It offers peaceful surroundings, rich wildlife and traces of history across the rolling terrain.

About the reserve
Ølene is one of Bornholm's largest water areas, approximately 120 hectares
Ølene was protected in 1942 by the state's purchase as a wildlife reserve, as the area contains valuable nature. Since then, the protection has meant that animals and plants live and develop exclusively under natural conditions.
However, the area can be observed from the 3 bird towers nearby. The southwestern bird tower has user-friendly access for wheelchairs and strollers.
It is easy and accessible to get to Ølene both on foot and by bicycle. If you come by car, you can park your car in the parking lot near Ølenevej 29.
A unique bird and flower life
Around 200 different species of flowers have been found in Ølene. A large part of the bog is covered with the flower sharp avnekippe, which is a rarity in the rest of Denmark.
The reserve serves as a breeding area for many birds. In the forest around the bog, you may be lucky enough to see a visiting white-tailed eagle, which in all its splendor makes the buzzards seem small.
