The fish house and the watermill
The area around Slusegaard is protected and publicly accessible. Here you can go for lovely walks, take a walk on the beach, see the fascinating water mill, and pet both sheep, lambs and horses. It is also possible to book a guided tour of the area, so you can delve deeper into the fantastic history of the place.
At Slusegaard there is a unique fishing facility, where you can see the exciting fish house, hatchery and spring house. If you visit Slusegaard in the autumn, you may see trout jumping into the stream.
Slusegårds Water Mill is located near the outlet of Øle Å on South Bornholm. In the area there is a mill pond, which in addition to the water mill also contains a trout house. The facility also includes a hatchery for hatching trout fry and a spring house that supplies clean water to the hatchery.
The water supply to both the mill and the trout house is controlled via risers, and the pond also has risers for overflow.
The mill was founded in the early 19th century, while the trout house was built in the middle of the same century by the owner of Slusegården, inspired by similar French constructions.
The mill house is a four-bay half-timbered building with a thatched roof. The mill wheel is placed in one open outer bay, and it drives a grinder that grinds flour, with direct drive from the mill shaft's digging wheel.
The digging wheel can also be connected to a pulley, which could pull a saw and a chopping machine on the farm via a long, endless rope.
After a period of great decay, the new owner, Sv. Å. Christoffersen, in 1949, together with the National Museum and the Bornholm Museum, initiated a thorough restoration of the mill pond and buildings in the 1950s and 1960s.
The water mill wheel was renewed in 1989, and the mill's grinder is now functional again.
The entire complex is unique and therefore both protected as a natural and architectural monument, and it is open to the public.
