Experience Hasle
Smokehouse, craft and jewel lakes
Hasle leaves its mark
Hasle lies on Bornholm’s west coast, close to the sea, to history and to some of the island’s special nature experiences. The town has roots as a fishing and working-class town, and the traces can still be felt around the harbour, the smokehouse and the old trades built on fish, coal, clay and clinker.
Here, the atmosphere is calm and straightforward. You find it in the view of the sunset over the Baltic Sea, in the scent from the smokehouse and in the history that is still present in the town. Perhaps that is why many people feel like staying a little longer in the old harbour town, which stays with you, even after the holiday is over.

Harbour life in Hasle
The town gathers around the harbour. Here, boats, places to eat, the smokehouse, the harbour bath and the town beach are all within a short walk, and in summer there is a quiet life along the quay.
The harbour bath makes it easy to combine a walk through town with a swim. Hasle is also a good starting point for experiences on the water, for example kayak tours along the west coast, where you can see the town and coastline from another angle.
Nature experiences close to Hasle
Around Hasle, the landscape changes quickly. South of the town lies Kultippen, an open and raw area with traces of the coal industry. The nature here is different from many other places on Bornholm, and that is exactly why it is worth exploring.
Nearby you also find the so-called jewel lakes: Rubinsøen, Smaragdsøen, Pyritsøen and Safirsøen. The lakes are former clay and coal pits, which today have become quiet nature areas with opportunities for swimming, fishing and small pauses along the way.
North of Hasle lie the small fishing villages of Helligpeder, Teglkås and Vang. Here, the road follows the coast, and the cliffs begin to stand out more clearly. Continue towards Vang Granitbrud, and you meet a striking landscape with steep rock walls and views of the sea.
Food experiences in Hasle
Hasle Røgeri is part of the town’s history and one of the food experiences many people associate with Hasle. Here, the smoking is still done in the traditional way in open chimneys with alder wood. It brings scent, taste and a close connection to the craft that has shaped Bornholm for generations.
Try, for example, smoked herring, fish cakes or the Bornholm classic Sol over Gudhjem with smoked herring, egg yolk, radishes and chives. Around the harbour and in the town, you will also find other places to eat when you want to take a break, enjoy the view or end the day with a meal close to the water.

Craft in Hasle
In the old warehouse buildings by the harbour lies Bornholms Center for Kunsthåndværk at Grønbechs Gård. Here, you meet craft from across the island, including glass, ceramics, textiles, wood and metal. Bornholm has strong traditions for working with materials. In Hasle, this gets a special setting, close to the harbour and to the town’s history with fishing, clay, coal and clinker. In this way, Grønbechs Gård becomes both a window into Bornholm’s craft and a natural part of the experience in Hasle.

Did you know?
Hasle has not only left its mark on the landscape, but also on floors, ovens and buildings far from the town. The local clay was used for clinker, tiles and firebricks because it could withstand very high heat. For many years, Hasle was therefore not just a harbour town, but also a small industrial town with materials underfoot.
