Winter on Bornholm
Rocky coasts, starry skies and winter adventures
Same island, new adventures
Winter on Bornholm is the same island, but with a different rhythm. The sea feels bigger. The cliffs stand sharper, and the darkness makes room for stars, stillness and new adventures close to nature.
Here, winter is not about fitting in as much as possible. It is about getting closer to Bornholm at your own pace. Walk along the coast, feel the wind in the rift valleys, step inside a craft workshop or let the day end with local flavours and warmth in your cheeks.
On the winter island of Bornholm, raw nature, open workshops, small towns, strong flavours and experiences await that feel special right now. Not because the island is different, but because you meet it in a different way.

Winter sharpens the island
In winter, Bornholm comes into clearer focus. The light falls low over the Baltic Sea, the sea takes up more space, and the cliffs stand raw against wind, waves and clear winter air.
On North Bornholm, you can walk along the coast by Hammerknuden, Opalsøen and Hammershus, where the wind, the sea and the dark rock faces are part of the experience. Here, nature and history sit close together, with the castle ruin, the old quarries and the paths along the edge of the sea.
In the middle of the island, Almindingen awaits with forest paths, rift valleys and quiet viewpoints. You may also be lucky enough to see European bison between the trees. To the south, the beaches lie open and wide, with Dueodde’s pale sand, the dunes and the winter-cold sea as your companion.
Winter on Bornholm is not only something you see. It is something you feel. In your cheeks after a walk along the coast. In the sound of water in a rift valley. In the wind over the cliffs. And when the days grow shorter, winter opens another way to experience nature.

The starry sky over Bornholm
Bornholm is one of Denmark’s most beautiful places to experience the night sky. Bornholm’s nights can offer the bright band of the Milky Way, and even the northern lights. Hammershus, Opalsøen and Serpentinervejen near Gudhjem offer unique views where both the galaxy and the reflections of the stars can be experienced.
See more nature experiencesOut into the winter adventure
Winter on Bornholm also calls for movement. On walking trails, cycling routes and along the coast, there is more space, fresher air and a different sense of being close to the landscape.
You can follow Højlyngsstien through Ravnedalen’s dramatic rocky landscape, walk the historic and raw tracks of Stenhuggerstien or head out on Finnens Fodspor, where the island’s wild nature unfolds with forest, cliffs, open expanses and small traces of history. If you prefer more speed, mountain bike trails wait between the trees, while anglers find some of winter’s strongest moments along the coast.
For some, the winter adventure begins with a dip in the sea. In harbour baths and local winter bathing spots, cold, water and warmth meet in the simplest way. First the shock. Then the calm in the body afterwards.
Whether you walk, cycle, fish or simply go outside to feel the weather, the winter island of Bornholm is a place where you can use your body and get close to nature.
Frost weather in the rift valleys
On cold winter days, something special can happen in Bornholm’s rift valleys. Water that seeps and runs down the rock faces can freeze into icy falls, icicles and clear patterns in the granite.
In Ravnedalen, Døndalen and the rift valleys of Almindingen, the landscape takes on another mood when water, rock and cold meet. It feels almost like stepping into a quiet winter cathedral, where sounds are softened and the details of nature come very close.
Into the warmth
When the wind picks up and darkness falls early, it feels natural to head indoors. On Bornholm, that does not mean the experiences stop. They simply change form.
Explore museums, galleries, workshops and small shops, where the island’s history, materials and people come closer. At Hjorths Fabrik, you can feel Bornholm’s ceramic history in the old workshops, while craftspeople across the island continue to work with glass, clay, textiles and other materials with an eye for detail.
After a walk in the wind, the day can continue with something warm in your cup, Bornholm ingredients or flavours from local producers. Perhaps beer, chocolate, smoked foods or a meal somewhere with time to settle in.
In winter, there is often more time. Time to see the craft up close. Time to step into the history. And time to feel that the winter island of Bornholm is also alive behind the lit windows.
The taste of the winter island
Winter gives Bornholm flavours a different depth. After a walk in wind, rain or clear frosty air, there is something special about coming inside to food that warms, smells good and has roots in the island’s ingredients.
Around Bornholm, you will find producers, cafés, farm shops and places to eat where local flavours are part of the experience. Smoked foods, beer, chocolate, caramels, mustard, gin, coffee and baked goods each tell something about an island where many people work close to the ingredients and the craft.
In winter, there is often more time to really taste. To ask where the ingredients come from or to find a small place you did not know before, and let the day end at a little table while the darkness lies close outside.
When winter lights up
In November and December, winter on Bornholm gains a special layer of light. The towns are decorated, the workshops open their doors, and around the island you can find Christmas markets, small events and local flavours with something warm in your cup.
Christmas on Bornholm is closely tied to crafts, food and the people who create things here all year round. Here, you can find gifts with hands and history behind them, taste your way through Bornholm specialities or spend a winter weekend moving from stall to shop, from harbour to café, from dark streets to lit windows.
In the darkest months of the year, the lights, scents and small encounters make winter a little warmer. Perhaps this is where you find the gift you were not looking for, or the flavour you take home as a small piece of Bornholm.
The towns’ living Christmas calendars
In December, the Bornholm community moves closer together. Several of the island’s towns have their own living Christmas calendar, where the day’s door is not opened in cardboard, but in real doors and windows around the streets.
Every day, locals and guests gather at a new house, shop or workshop to see the day’s door revealed. Often, a few Christmas songs are sung, and in some places the host of the day offers something warm to drink or a small Christmas taste to warm up with.
It is a simple and lovely winter tradition, where light, community and small encounters are allowed to fill the darkness.

Get closer to the winter island of Bornholm
Winter on Bornholm takes a little more planning than a summer day on the beach. Some places are closed, others have special winter opening hours, and the weather can quickly give the day a new direction.
In return, you get an island with plenty of space. You can choose a base close to the sea, the forest or one of the towns and let the days take shape according to wind, light and mood. Perhaps you start out by the coast, continue into the warmth and end with local flavours, culture or a quiet evening under the winter sky.
Check current opening hours, events, transport and places to eat before you leave. Then you are well on your way to experiencing the winter island of Bornholm at the pace that makes the season special.
Did you know that Bornholm has its own ski slope?
It sounds almost unlikely, but near Østerlars, Bornholm has its own ski slope with a lift. It is not like a ski resort in the mountains, but when frost and snow arrive at the right time, the slope can open for skiing, Bornholm style.
Bornholms Skivenner also keep an eye on the possibilities for cross-country skiing and prepare tracks in Almindingen when snow, frost and forest conditions allow. It does not happen every winter, but that is exactly why it is a special experience when the winter island of Bornholm suddenly gets ski tracks between the trees.
